Ten Most Expensive Disasters

10. Titanic – $ 150 million
One of the most famous disasters cost only $ 150 million (in today’s money).

9. Bridge and the fuel tanker – $ 358 Million
26 August, 2004 – the car crashed into the full fuel tanker, which caught fire and exploded, destroying the bridge. The cost of reconstruction was 358 million dollars.

8. Train Collision – $500 million
12 Sept., 2008, California – two trains collided. 25 people died, the MetroLink company lost $500 million (including payments to the families of the victims)

7. B-2 Bomber fall – $ 1,4 billion
B-2 Stealth Bomberfell fell on the 23rd February of, 2008. The flames destroyed almost the entire aircraft. Both pilots ejected and survived.

6. An oil spill by the Exxon Valdez tanker - $ 2,5 billion
An oil spill by the Exxon Valdez tanker was not the largest in terms of the amount of oil, but because of the remoteness of the place where it happened, the whole operation of cleaning cost 2.5 billion dollars.

5. Fire at the oil platform – $ 3.4 billion
One of the most horrific disasters in the history of oil production complexes. Due to the technical staff error, who forgot to change 1 safety valve, an explosion and fire took place. This disaster took the lives of 167 workers and cost 3.4 billion dollars.

4. Challenger Explosion - $ 5.5 billion.
28 January, 1986 – after 73 seconds of the space shuttle Challenger launch it exploded. The price of the shuttle and equipment was 5.5 billion dollars.

3. Explosion of the Prestige tanker – $ 12 billion
13 Nov, 2002 – oil tanker explosion has led to the leakage of 77,000 tonnes of fuel. The cleaning cost 12 billion dollars.

2. Explosion of the space shuttle Columbia – 13 billion dollars.

1 February, 2003 – shuttle Columbia exploded. It cost the Americans 13 million dollars.

1. Chernobyl. $200 billion.
On the 26the Apr, 1986 the most horible disaster in the history of mankind took place. Explosion of the 4-th powerblock of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station, evacuation of people, eliminating the consequences and other expenses amounted to 200 billion dollars by the most modest estimates .
